School is about the only place you can wear a pentacle and not be totally discriminated for it by general society. So I started reading Rand… it’s pretty much as painful as I’d heard. One-dimensional characters, a weak imagination, and a tendency to overdo *everything* cripple her a bit as a writer. Maybe it’s just me, though. So I’ve started school too, and have been so disgustingly busy with schoolwork that I haven’t had time for anything (tore? schoolwork? arugh?). Except staring at all the beautiful women… ah, the advantages of college campuses. But my DSL hookup goes live on Friday, which is the greatest goddamn news of all time, because life is very hard when you have to sell your ass on the streetcorner so you can snort some broadband off a 12-year-old’s ass… but that’s neither here nor there, so forget I ever mentioned anything. And did anyone else think the end of that last thread was kinda cute? I’m glad that randal’s comment pages are still a safe place to let out your horribly crippling insecurities (napoleon complex anyone?).

Yes, Rand does tend to overdo things and repeat herself – and if you cant early stages of the book, make sure you skip John Galt’s speech near the end (if youre reading Atlas Shrugged). On a side note, The Dispossessed doesn’t seem like shit-hot writing either, but maybe it will get better. And Randal, to quote Tyler Durden, it could be worse: a woman could cut off your penis while you’re asleep and throw it out of the window of a moving car 😉

it’s not the best writing, but it does a lot better job with characters than Rand does. Plus, I liked the plot a lot better, but that’s just a matter of taste. And if you all want shit-hot writing, check out Mark Helprin; not merely is he a newer, up-and-coming type (name-dropping galore), but he is actually an incredibly engaging writer. I will now stop talking about books altogether. so I actually have 26 credit hours of class per week, except that 9 of those are paid, so I don’t get credit for them; I have the most disgusting schedule ever. Busy busy busy busy busy. Every time I try to type "busy" I end up typing "busty", which says bad things about what’s going on in my head. Fix me. DSL FRIDAY!!!!!

Everyone is gone. Scooted off to school they have, be it Santa Fe, New York, Boulder, California, Iowa, wherever — they are gone. I already miss Tore. *sniffle* I guess it’s time to curl up into a little ball and cry my misery away, or go out and gather a new pool of friends. Woowee, this is going to be a long stretch until Christmas. I cleaned the house today. Well, not the whole house. I did the dishes, cleaned whole kitchen, scrubbed both bathrooms from floor to ceiling and even picked up my own room. I did not know that our bathtub was white. After laboring at it for ~ 40 minutes with the most potent chemicals I could find, the previously splotchy-gray-and-nasty bathtub is now a nice white. It’s good. Next weekend’s cleaning should be a *lot* easier to do. Tore and I got into a little scrap the other day over Ayn Rand. He says she’s crazy and just plain wrong. He has never read any of her work. He advised me to drop my capitalist tendencies and read “The Dispossesed” by Ursula LeGuin. I went out and bought it, and am about 300 pages in. Full review when I’m done. Conversely, I went and bought a copy of Rand’s “The Fountainhead”, bundled it with my copy of “Atlas Shrugged” and sent it off with him to Santa Fe. I’m sure he’ll loathe it, but I think he’ll actually read it. I hope. 🙂 The webcam is on, and it’s spotting my Lava Lamp (thanks James!), so get stoned and take a look 😀

Damn… more books to put on the reading list… I don’t think I am ever going to get through "the name of the rose"…. translated too many times… and now there is a side of german. Fuck man. It is a good read though… the movie was definetley a good preview to the book. But, the political satire and commentary is pulling at me as per usual… "Stupid white men" is pretty good… but I want to check his sources before I start spouting the written word. Very inflamitory so far. I have been thinking about Atlas Shrugged a bit more… what is it about? and didn’t we read some Ayn Rand in Freshman year english (in the short stories part)? Oh, and while we are on books, has anyone read "All quiet on the western front," by Erich Maria Remarque? It’s a required book for a class this year, and I just want to get a few opinions before I start it.

Atlas Shrugged is this bullshit story about how all the important people in the world decide to go and form up their own little bullshit soceity where there are no insurance salesmen or hairdressers or other bullshit jobs and there are some nice 85 year long bullshit monolouges and it is dull and pretentious and someone should tell Rand that she wouldn’t be in the societie especial she would be left to rot with all the little l33t haXX0rz and people who inspect shoes for a living.

LOL, funny, but wrong 😉 [i]Atlas Shrugged[/i] is about how the world is actually ran by a few people — the producers of the world. Many, many people work for the producers, and are producers themselves to a lesser extent. However, there are certain types of societal leeches that produce nothing and only serve to hinder the progress of said producers. The book revolves around the so-called producers deciding to not take the crap of the leeches, and just quit, and leave. Summarily, the majority of the jobs go with them, as does any sort of productivity — simply because the leeches are just that, and the people with actual talent have left. Throw in some things about progression of self, a hint of anti-government nostalgia, and the denouncement of society-based morality. $.02

life without an internet connection is hard. you have to go steal other peoples’. As far as Remarque goes, it’s not badly written, but it’s still a war story about a bunch of guys, which means certain things as far as interest maintenance goes. It’s still well-written though. I’m surprised it’s required reading, since it was the same for me… in 7th grade. No, really. Matt’s analysis of Rand is about the same I’ve heard from everyone besides Randal and Janelle. Regardless of her ideology, I’ve heard she’s just a flat-out terrible writer. Then again, I’ve been too busy with Don Quixote to crack them yet, so I’ll get back to everyone on that. And for everyone who’s now looking into "The Dispossessed", it’s supposedly a mirror of Rand, except a well-written one; it’s an anarchist utopia instead of a capitalist one, and I at least thought it was an interesting story. Talked my landlord into looking into DSL; he seems to think he might just go for it without making me pay it all, which would rock. Until then, I’m stuck using the school connection in the library, so don’t expect to see me very frequently.

It was a pretty rough day today. Work was blah. Jack wanted to get all up in my shit about backups, IP addressing, blah blah blah, but I shut him down. I don’t like doing that, because then it feels like I’m asserting some sort of power in the company — and I actually have none. Makes it a little tense. Loooong weekend

Man, talk about a long weekend. It started like Thursday night and just kept going … no sleep that night, little sleep the next, party, blah blah blah. Makes for a very tired me — I’m glad I’m getting some sleep tonight. So yea, Tony threw a get together. Well, he really didn’t do anything besides make a single comment here and then hide in his room the whole night, but who’s keeping track? Anyway, during the night we figured out the greatest new invention for overweight people: the Fatapult. Picture a recliner with one of those springs under the seat — when you hit the recliner lever, BOING! your fat ass goes rocketing off the chair and, depending on your level of obesity, across the room, into your favorite pants, or about 20 inches onto your feet. We should have a prototype soon. 😉 So Tore and I are huge dorks. The other night we played 256 rounds of Soul Calibur *straight*. I don’t know how long it took, but I do know that I owned him pretty badly. Heh. Suckah. It’s looking to be a pretty crazy week at work. I’ve got 2 on-floor installations to do, one dedicated connection to hook up, a wireless site to survey and more. It’ll be busy, which is fun. Oh, and FYI — do not try to do TCP/IP traffic shaping / bandwidth limiting with Windows 2000. No matter what they say about Quality of Service, it doesn’t work.

I hate NextCard. They are a terrible credit card company. Why? One word: Interest. With obscene interest rates above the 20% mark, this card sucks ass. I was going through my finances, which is oh-so-very-fun *cough*, and I didn’t know I was getting screwed until I looked at my statement and almost coughed up my left lung. I rolled over the balance to my luverly Discover Card and cancelled my account. If you have a NextCard, I suggest doing the same. Here’s a picture I found hilarious, YMMV. FYI, 423 N. Weber is not a "party house". We have no fraternity letters, no couch on our porch, no kegerator, and we *do* value our property. So, we are not a party house. A house that has parties often, sure. We are not an impromptu party hot-spot.

Okay, so we throw this party and I’ve stumbled upon a couple things. The first one is that girls will wait until you are nice and fucked up to bring up anything important. Burnz totally agrees with me on this one. It’s like they’re trying to get you at your weakest, and dammit, it works. Girls. Sheesh. The other thing is that parties are expensive. Holy cow, it’s incredible how quick it is to go through a bucket of cash when preparing for a party. I mean, $80 is chump change when there’s a $50 keg and loads of hard liquor, plus food. Very fun, but hard on the pocketbook. Thank god for a Liquor Fund. And one more thing … Soul Calibur is perhaps the best game ever made. Sure, it’s only for the Playstation for now, but man, this game is freaking addictive. I can’t wait for Soul Calibur 2 — will probably be the impetus behind the purchase of a PS2 or X-Box. w3rd. There’ll be a quick review of the party, as well as some updates for the site at weberstreet.net shortly — stay tuned!

[b]Party Time[/b] Party is gonna happen — rock! Starting right around 9pm at the weberst house. I feel pretty energized today, but not like I’m doing superb or anything. Kinda odd. Anyway, yea, got a raise the other day and went and had lunch with Samantha Garrett. Yumm. She’s incredible … I’m looking forward to the party tonight — anybody have any keg suggestions? (/me secretly hopes tons of people show up. please please please) I can’t believe summer is ending soon. Makes me think that time is going by waaay to fast for it’s own good.

[b]It’s Party Time [i]!![/i][/b] Summer is drawing to a close, so we’re having a huge blowout before it dies. 9pm Friday @ the weber house — for more info, see the event site at [L=http://www.weberstreet.net]http://www.weberstreet.net[/L]. So I go out with Craigalito last night, and we’re bummin, and we see a ton of hot chicks that I know from highschool. Wowsah, that was nice. Anyway, invited them all over for the party, blah blah blah, it was cool. Saw Hotty Michelle and the ice bucket while I was there, too, and that was okay. Saw Tore, too. It was a good time hanging out with the friends. Finally got a Qwest guy out to look at our line. He came out, tested some shit and everything came back clean. He swapped out NIUs/smartjacks at the house and at the CO, so hopefully, God willing, our line is fixed. I hope. Please. *sniffle* … that’s it for 24 hours … oh, that, and making weberstreet.net from scratch. Did that too. heh. [b]Update![/b] — 08/07 @ 4:47p — I got a raise! An Extra $100 a month, WOOO!
