Went out with Becky, Matt and Julie tonight to Mataam Fez. We had a really great time, and our waiter, Jay (same waiter we had last time) got a HEFTY tip. Especially cuz he sold me a bottle of plum wine, which I drank almost single handedly. 😀 😉 The Lamb Brouchette was better than last time, and I think everybody had a really great time. The Becky-Randal thing did not go to well. Very little positive response for most of the night. She had a stomach ache, which could have understandably detracted, but comeon, nothing? Seriously doubting a date #2. Matt and Julie, however, seemed to really hit it off — Julie’s a really great girl, and the kind of gal that you can take anywhere and have a good time with. Work is just about over. We submitted our two drafts of our proposal to HQ for final review before the real thing, and they took it over! Which means that everybody at the Colorado Springs location is out of a job. So … now that that is dead, Corey and I are hardcore pursuing our [L=http://www.ufogaming.com]cybercafe idea[/L]. That should turn out well. Oh, I had lunch with Sammi yesterday. That was simply incredible. Sammi is perhaps the best girl alive. Period. She is always interested in whatever nonsense I have to spew, and it smart and witty and fun and has a great smile. So nice. Too bad she lives in Grinnell and has constant boy problems 😉 So that’s my update. The WAR OF IRAQI FREEDOM AND OIL AND STUFF continues unabated. Some of the footage on TV is pretty cool to watch, but you know, sometimes you just need to get away from the media saturation that is always in yer face. $.02

General Update

Hell, I don’t even know what I’m writing anymore. So I’m going to ramble. Yea, Becky is this great girl, and man, I really like her. I don’t think she likes me that much, though. We have a date … going to Mataam Fez (Thanks James!) on Tuesday night … supposed to double date with Keen, but … I don’t know if he’ll have a woman. IM him at keener2u or talk to me if you have a suitable hookup who’d like some free moroccan and a good time. It’s spring break! I have no truck! It’s in the shop! Because parts couldn’t get from Denver to here! Because of the snow storm! So I have no car! For spring break! Yea! I think I’m going to buy a Jeep Cherokee! Yea! I’m so self conscious right now. I feel like a loser. An almost middle aged, balding, fat, gap-toothed freak of nature. And boy, does that make me feel like shit! Janelle is in town for break. She called. I think I was sort of gruff. I’m not sure. But boy, do I feel terrible after having talked to her. I’m such a fucking loser. No, you don’t understand; let me explain. I am over her, no problem. She’s 18, has her own thing, I have mine, yada yada. No, it’s not her I miss. It’s the nice, loverly feeling that you get to enjoy when you’re in a comfortable, long term relationship. I don’t think Randal is as bad off as he might think he is. This is an easy statement based upon some individuals I have known over the last few years. In that respect, I’d say Randal has it going pretty good. I just got back from 4 days of snowboarding in Winter Park with some other boarders from school. We all stayed at this swank ass hostel for 22$ a night. Our grocery bill for all 4 of us for 4 days ended up being 90$. I can’t recommend this idea enough to anybody without spring break plans.

If we go to war, there is still the large chance that not as many people will die (some will. a lot will). However, it is certainly less than if we leave Saddam in power, which will 100% guarantee a high number of civilian deaths. You also say that we "pretend that sanctions put any pressure on him". So, leaving Saddam in power will not promote peace and justice, and you have conceded that International diplomacy has not worked. Might I ask what some other alternatives are? I agree that removing Saddam will increase the likelihood of retalitory terrorism in the USA. No doubt about that. Should we maintain our nation’s founding isolationist ideology and let Iraq implode, or should we step in, despite the associated risk?

<rant> I just knew that someone would try to compare what we’re doing to Vietnam – and there is one big reason why thats wrong. The reason we didnt win the Vietnam because it was us fighting pretty much the whole damn country. In Iraq, there are a great many people who dont like Saddam but are afraid to say anything. They dont get much media coverage, but some of the biggest supporters of the war are ex-patriate Arabs, especially Iraqis who have fled the country. You ask when it became our job to go regulate "peace and justice". We’ve pretty much appointed ourselves to that position since WWII. And thats what we’re doing with this war. Herein lies a big flaw in the Bush Administration’s argumentation. They say that we’re doing this because Iraq is an imminent threat to American national security – which its not. Saddam is too smart to try and do something like that (I dont much believe in the Iraq-Al Qaeda connection). [B]If[/B] we were actually threatened, then we wouldnt need any damn permission from anyone. But we’re not, so this conflict is basically us being the world’s policeman. However, when youre playing the world’s policeman, its helpful to have the world supporting you. It’s true that getting rid of Saddam might not make things any better, but letting him stay in power is not promoting peace and justice in any way. If we really stay committed to Iraq, I have no doubt that we can help rebuild it into a prosperous nation – this country has done that before (hint, hint – Germany). The bottom line is this: we know Saddam has chemical weapons (hint hint – we gave them to him), we know he’s a brutal dictator, and we also know that he is not laying his arsenal on a lawn for the UN guys like the world community told him he should. The French want to play Daladier again, and give Saddam all the time in the world – more or less invalidating the authority of the UN. There is no way that any peaceful solution is going to get rid of Saddam and disarm Iraq as far as I can see – which is exactly what that guy was asking Laura, and if you listened, you would have heard that the girl wasnt giving a real answer (which is why he was getting mad). She was spouting a bunch of rhetoric that there were "other ways". What other ways? No one from the anti-war side has given a good alternative. The anti-war people also spout off a bunch of stuff about "peace". What about peace for the Iraqi people? Don’t they deserve it as much as we do? The peacenik’s arguments work against them. We’re trying to go over there and make peace (although, I will admit that those nice oil fields are probably a motivating factor too). The only ones who truly have a leg to stand on are the radical isolationist Americans – who keep saying that its none of our damn business. It is probably not the best use of our resources right now, but the upcoming conflict in Iraq is far from being unjustified. </rant>

actually, the rumors that saddam gasses his own people are not true. he gassed the kurds, not iraqi citizens. and, yeah, we’re not planning on helping iraq rebuild…i think the quote was something like "we’ll stay there as long as necessary, but get out as soon as possible." so, in other words, when next years budget comes out (assuming this war is over) there won’t be any aid to iraq just like there wasn’t any to afghanistan this year. anyway, iraq isn’t this huge threat that the media/bush administration sensationalizes it to be. we’re just hurting ourselves here, and we’re doing it without international support which is hideous. i mean, what happens when someone actually attacks us and we have no allies to help us fight back? what if we end up going after n. korea and then, inevitably, china and no one his helping us fight? i think it’s a slippery slope. that’s all. and i know none of y’all will agree with me, but whatever 🙂

What scares me is that there is a crazy North Korean who is DEMONSTRATING that he has weapons of Mass destruction, butwe are ignoring him. Why? Because North Korea’s biggest export is North Koreans and Korean food- not oil. No matter what you say, oil is playing a major role in all of this. Think about where Mr. the lights are off and the hampster is dead comes from. He wants to possess, in some way, those oil fields. And as to Jared’s comment about restoring countries that we devestate, we also restarted Japan, but the economy was in better shape back then. Which also raises another point- where is the rest of the world when it comes to aiding flailing countries? Yes, we cut our support to Afghanistan. Why don’t Canada, Australia, Switzerland, England, or Spain step in to help out a bit? Fuckers.

i was wondering how long a serious and interesting debate about important matters in the state of the world could last on this site before it turned back into a petty debate about who has offended whom in this little e-clique. but for those of us who would are still thinking about the war (because it’s still happening), i thought this was good, so i thought i would post it. i’m as confused as the next person about whether this war is necessary, whether this war is inevitable, whether it’s important to support my government regardless of my own beliefs. but, beliefs about saddam aside, i think what this speech says about america’s attitude is worth considering. no matter what is right, no matter what is the truth, this is all really sad. anyway, the speech: US Senator Robert Byrd Speech delivered on the floor of the US Senate March 19, 2003 3:45pm I believe in this beautiful country. I have studied its roots and gloried in the wisdom of its magnificent Constitution. I have marveled at the wisdom of its founders and framers. Generation after generation of Americans has understood the lofty ideals that underlie our great Republic. I have been inspired by the story of their sacrifice and their strength. But, today I weep for my country. I have watched the events of recent months with a heavy, heavy heart. No more is the image of America one of strong, yet benevolent peacekeeper. The image of America has changed. Around the globe, our friends mistrust us, our word is disputed, our intentions are questioned. Instead of reasoning with those with whom we disagree, we demand obedience or threaten recrimination. Instead of isolating Saddam Hussein, we seem to have isolated ourselves. We proclaim a new doctrine of preemption which is understood by few and feared by many. We say that the United States has the right to turn its firepower on any corner of the globe which might be suspect in the war on terrorism. We assert that right without the sanction of any international body. As a result, the world has become a much more dangerous place. We flaunt our superpower status with arrogance. We treat UN Security Council members like ingrates who offend our princely dignity by lifting their heads from the carpet. Valuable alliances are split. After war has ended, the United States will have to rebuild much more than the country of Iraq. We will have to rebuild America’s image around the globe. The case this Administration tries to make to justify its fixation with war is tainted by charges of falsified documents and circumstantial evidence. We cannot convince the world of the necessity of this war for one simple reason. This is a war of choice. There is no credible information to connect Saddam Hussein to 9/11. The twin towers fell because a world-wide terrorist group, Al Qaeda, with cells in over 60 nations, struck at our wealth and our influence by turning our own planes into missiles, one of which would likely have slammed into the dome of this beautiful Capitol except for the brave sacrifice of the passengers on board. The brutality seen on September 11th and in other terrorist attacks we have witnessed around the globe are the violent and desperate efforts by extremists to stop the daily encroachment of western values upon their cultures. That is what we fight. It is a force not confined to borders. It is a shadowy entity with many faces, many names, and many addresses. But, this Administration has directed all of the anger, fear, and grief which emerged from the ashes of the twin towers and the twisted metal of the Pentagon towards a tangible villain, one we can see and hate and attack. And villain he is. But, he is the wrong villain. And this is the wrong war. If we attack Saddam Hussein, we will probably drive him from power. But, the zeal of our friends to assist our global war on terrorism may have already taken flight. The general unease surrounding this war is not just due to "orange alert." There is a pervasive sense of rush and risk and too many questions unanswered. How long will we be in Iraq? What will be the cost? What is the ultimate mission? How great is the danger at home? A pall has fallen over the Senate Chamber. We avoid our solemn duty to debate the one topic on the minds of all Americans, even while scores of thousands of our sons and daughters faithfully do their duty in Iraq. What is happening to this country? When did we become a nation which ignores and berates our friends? When did we decide to risk undermining international order by adopting a radical and doctrinaire approach to using our awesome military might? How can we abandon diplomatic efforts when the turmoil in the world cries out for diplomacy? Why can this President not seem to see that America’s true power lies not in its will to intimidate, but in its ability to inspire? War appears inevitable. But, I continue to hope that the cloud will lift. Perhaps Saddam will yet turn tail and run. Perhaps reason will somehow still prevail. I along with millions of Americans will pray for the safety of our troops, for the innocent civilians in Iraq, and for the security of our homeland. May God continue to bless the United States of America in the troubled days ahead, and may we somehow recapture the vision which for the present eludes us.

I think everyone has some very valid points in this argument. However, the peaceniks don’t have any strong supporting facts to back up their arguments. all they do is run around and holler "no war for oil". this war is not for oil, which is why i do wish that bush and the media would refrain from making comments about our military doing a good job of defending the oil wells in iraq. it begins to make me wonder what we are really fighting for. i do understand why protecting the wells is important though, the iraqi’s will need a consumable product to sell to the world in order for a new economy to take hold in that country. the iraqi regime under hussein’s leadership does support and aid in the training of terrorists. there is no other explanation why a 747 fuselage would be in the middle of a desert. hussein and his sons are generally evil men, spraying people with acids to slowly eat the flesh off their bodies just because they didn’t say hello to you in an appropriate tone of voice is no reason to kill a person. having rape rooms in palaces for entertainment purposes is a abhorent idea. these are just a couple of reasons why the iraqi people should be freed from hussein’s regime. I do not think that the united states should be closely involved in the rebuilding of iraq, except for foreign aid and humanitarian aid, until their economy can allow the iraqi people to take care of themselves. as far as having support from the world in this war, we have more countries backing our decision than bush 41 had in the gulf war. bush 41 had the support of 34 countries, bush 43 now has the support of 45 countries publicly and several others that for safety reasons wish to remain anonymous. (this is where i get frustrated) as far as germany, france, and canada are concerned, we don’t really need their help in this war. france is blatantly trying to make the un seem unnecessary ( which they are) only to push for the advancement of the european union, germany is all for the european union as well, and canada is a suburb of france so i guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. if it wasn’t for the united states intervention in wwii the french would be speaking german right now along with many other european countries. so the french of all people should be behind us in this war, do they not want freedom for the iraqi people? it is a distinct possibility. france has made some under the table deals with iraq (against un resolutions) and i think they could stand to lose a lot when iraq’s regime is changed. all in all i think that war is bad. i hate it when people die unnecessarily, which is why we have to help iraq as quickly as possible. the sooner we free them, the sooner they can get on with their new found freedom and the quicker we can get our own troops home safely. ( then it’s on to north korea).

My truck is fatale. It’s supposed to have ~150psi in each cylinder, and mine has 125/135/15/0 psi in cylinders 1/2/3/4, respectively. That essentially means my truck is dead. Guess I’ll start shopping around for another vehicle soon. *sigh* Anybody have any recommendations on what to do with a dead truck? My truck is dead. Called up the place this morning, and although they haven’t checked all four yet, cylinder #1 has low compression. You know what that means? That means $. Lots of $. So, probably going to cancel the insurance tomorrow morning and start shopping for a new(er) vehicle. Motorcycle is not out of the question, but it *is* impractical. Anybody know where I can pick up a Jeep for cheap? Also, cell phone is on the fritz while T-Mobile gets itself organized. It’ll be the same number — for at least one year: under contract! Tore is going to the Denver Lindy Exchange (DLX) this weekend, so he’ll be in town. Alone. Although I’d like to harp on this “alone” factor, I will not. I’ll leave it to him to sob like a little baby for being, as like every other male with a hangup on a particular girl, a little moth, attracted to the oh-so-light-and-pretty flame that will eventually melt his eyes out and tear his palpitating heart from his chest and run it through a meat grinder, resulting in him turning into a broken wreck, a mere husk of what he was. Or not. Up to him. [b]Update[/b] – You know, it’s kind of sad, but I almost miss Burnz. Nother update, I guess. Truck is dead, and I broke down and took it to the shop. On the way, I could tell that something is really wrong … felt like I was driving on 1 cylinder. so … it’s probably dead dead, which means it’s almost time to start car hunting. Um … other than that, not much is going on. I’m really tired all the time, and it is not fun. I don’t sleep really well, because I’m all stressed because of truck/work1/work2/home-situation. It’s all piling up … thinking of a way I can get away for a little without having it all go to hell in a handbasket. Oh, another thing. HPI is no longer paying for my cell phone as of Feb 28. Should I stick with Voicestream, go to another provider, or say fuck it all and cancel the phone? I use ~ 500 minutes of peak time every month, about 60 mins of LD every month and a shitload (600+) mins of offpeak time. I travel seldom, and if I do, it is to large cities, usually in the Western USA. Okay, so we’re starting a CyberCafe. We have a URL and a logo picked and made, as well as a very large, very detailed business plan. But we are lacking one thing, and that is the approach to the whole thing: Should it be a computer gaming place + loungey/coffee-esque thing [b]OR[/b] Computer gaming place + pool + arcade games + small lounge? Any input on this topic is of great importance, and will most definitely impact what we choose to do. I’m having a hell of a time finding a cruiser (motorcycle) that is > 250cc and < 750cc. They just don't exist unless you want an early 90s model. And I don't want to get stuck with a tiny little bike that I'll want to sell in 2 months, and I don't want a monster that I'll be afraid to ride. Suck. At least I've got mad bank right now. heh. After some more thought, have decided that the Becky thing is a lost cause. 'nuff said. Went out w/ Christine for coffee last night and had a good time, although I wouldn't wish her situation upon anybody. It made me realize, primarily, that everybody has family issues -- *nobody* is exempt. Secondly, it really hit home that Family is the one thing that we can't get rid of, ever. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, though. Props to Craigalito on landing a job at an ISP ... you're in for a ride ... hope things are as well run there as they are here 😉 Oh, and yesterday was the 3 year ... oh, forget it already. Charging on a time basis, or a data basis? What kind of machines (Gaming powerhouses, or just some run of the mill machines like you’d find in kinko’s) What sort of hours of operation? How are you going to prevent "Hacking" or people stealing other peoples passwords with keyloggers? etc etc…. Thx Randal. I have a lot of work ahead of me. I think a nice hang out would be cool. Loungy feel + a pool table + giant beanbag chairs w/ X-Box/Gamecube area. As for computers I’d go with not top of the line PC’s but something a notch or two down. As for drinks I recommend only selling bottled drinks. That way you minimize the spillage. I’d also recommend getting some turntables (low end models but DJable for starters) that way if a person feels the need they can provide music for your [u]fans[/u]

I’m sitting in my office drinking beer and eating cake. How’s that for a cush job? Went and looked at motorcycles today. Mmmm, motorcycles. They really have a catch-22 on these bad boys. You can’t ride a motorcycle without a Motorcycle License. You can’t get a Motorcycle License without having a bike and knowing how to ride it. You can’t test-drive a motorcycle unless you have a Motorcycle License. So do you buy a motorcycle on blind faith, ride it home illegally, and then attempt to get the license? Or … spend $150 and take a class. Tough situation. And another thing. The Discover Channel, err … the “Science Channel”, in all of it’s wonderous incarnations is amazing. They’ve got planes, and travelling, and nuclear stuff, and how things just work, and animals and everything. Simply incredible. I can literally watch that set of stations for 6 hours, with absolutely no problem. So interesting. Kevin D. Mitnick’s [i]The Art of Deception[/i] is rather good. I was expecting an almost manual-esque romp through how to secure your organization. Instead, I was pleasured to read real-life and fictional situations, how they worked and how to avoid these things. More of a “what if … and how” thing instead of a dry technical analysis. Although extremely unsettling, it is very good.

A drivers liscense for a car is the same way… you just had parents or friends that owned such vehicles to teach you how to drive one. I believe you can get a Motorcycle learners permit just like you can for a car. I know that there are private companies (i even remember there being one in the chappel hills mall before i left) companies that will train you on how to ride a motorcycle and not kill yourself… and they give you the test to receive the motorcycle rating on your drivers liscense. I just enabled cleartext on this monitor… omg EVERYTHING is so much clearer. -Tim

Went out and saw a movie last night and tonight, and then went to the perk after tonight’s movie. We were there, and saw [L=http://simla.colostate.edu/~aare/public_html/index.html]Anna-Lisa and Holly[/L], and then met some of their friends, Tyler, Tom and Phil. They were pretty cool. We also saw Beth2, but she was pretty icey. And that was that. Saw The Recruit and Dare Devil recently. Recruit was pretty good, but it seemd like it was a rehashed plot, with new people (Collin Farrell & Al Pacino). Still and enjoyable movie … I especially liked … what’s her name … I don’t know, the hot chick. Dare Devil was also good (Afleck, Garner, Duncan and Farrell), but more in an action-packed-comic-book movie way. I’d recommend seeing both — especially if you can bring a woman along. On that note, I have found out that I am hopeless when it comes to girls. Maybe I’m just a huge dork. Or Mothra. And Tony is Godzilla, what with knocking down buildings and stumbling back into the sea (inside joke). Yes, back to Mothra. You know, attracted to flame, then I blow it, and flit away, nursing my little burnt wing tips. Damn those sensitive wings! Now that I have successfully derailed that train, I would like it to be known that although I think a girl is great *sigh*, there is, once again, no chance. I got the curb drop off the other night, which is a sure sign of “just friends pal, hit the road.” Hrmph. I recognize Randall’s symptoms. He is going through a Secondary Break-up Depression. It usually happens about 1-2 years after the Primary Breakup Depression. It is caused by forgetting all the negative factors of the old girlfriend. I think Randal has a lot more problems going in life than he’d care to share about. If he is feeling bad, he’s probably just covering it up with something lame, like being single. happy valentine’s day!

*sigh* I have no valentine. Happy Valentine’s Day, though, to all those wonderful people out there who also don’t have a valentine 😀 I’m tired today. I was up late writing code that mostly works (amazing) … it plots graphs and essentially logs all our traffic so we can tell how much bandwidth people are using. It’s pretty neat. Other than that, I’m irritated at “Directors” who don’t know how to do their jobs … the “IT Director” at the DoD place has been in for the past 3 days doing their thing trying to get it to work. Three days to setup a *software* firewall, a win2k AD Domain w/ 10 users, personal folders for each 10 users and a shared printer. What a fucking joke. And it’s not even trusted to the main company Forest, so the exchange passwords are separate from the local domain passwords. Guh. So … yea, that’s that. I need a (life | girlfriend | betterjob| workingcar | lot more money), but I’m too fucking tired/sissy to get any of them. I’m such a wimp. Guh at myself.

Randal, I’m glad you don’t have a valentine. I don’t have one either. And if you had a valentine, and I didn’t, I would be pissed off. Now, I’m not saying that I’m more swave than you and therefore I should have one before you, but I get pissed off at everyone who has a girlfriend when I don’t. Seriously, I told my friend to fuck off, just because he told me that he has a girlfriend. I also punched my brother in the face just for having a wife. Don’t feel alone on this one, killer. Just do what I do, make love to a sock that some girl left at your house at one of those parties you throw. (1st post)
